Story heists
Rockstar's synopsis opens on a robbery: when an easy score goes wrong, Jason and Lucia land in a criminal conspiracy that stretches across Leonida.
The crew lead is Raul Bautista, a seasoned bank robber always looking for talent. Official footage puts a masked Lucia in his getaway car.
Raul's recklessness raises the stakes with every score. Sooner or later, his crew will have to double down or pull their chips from the table.
TGG counts big heists as a fifth level above the four free-roam tiers, probably story-only. One Extended Look shot shows Jason and Lucia robbing what looks like a large vault.
In GTA V, story heists paid the bills and free-roam money changed nothing in the plot. TGG reports GTA 6 joins the two: the robberies you choose yourself pay for what the story asks of Jason and Lucia.
Rob Nelson told TGG the team saw a core GTA V problem: after the Union Depository job every character had over $30 million and little left to spend it on.

How you find a score
People may approach you and ask a favor and give you a tip in return. Someone you meet during the story may tip you off.
Higher-tier targets can appear on the map, and hovering one shows roughly how much it could pay. Small stores and gas stations never do — you can still rob any store you walk into, as the GTA 6 robberies guide explains.
Tips come three ways, per Rob Nelson: people who ask a favor, contacts from the story, and things you run into while out in the world. You then pick which job to hit by the profit it shows.
No two store jobs play the same. Some stores have a back door to slip through, some have security cameras to deal with, and clerks, guards or customers may try to be a hero — TGG saw it happen several times.
Back rooms can hide a safe. The code is yours to find: work it out, overhear it from a pedestrian, or, as TGG watched happen, get it texted by a fence.
Robberies work alone or as a pair, and robbing together strengthens Jason and Lucia's relationship, according to Game Informer's 29 September cover story.

Why you need the money
There are also spots where we actually slow down the flow or stop the flow until you hit certain cash goals.
Missions alone do not pay enough to finish the story, so free-roam robberies are part of the main path. GTA 6 money covers fences and the three balances.
Rob Nelson says the story sometimes "needs a minute to breathe for events to settle down or to open up some new contacts" — that is when a cash goal holds it back.
Stolen goods are not money until a fence buys them, and each kind of loot has its own fence: drugs, jewelry, cars and more. Fences unlock as the story goes on, so the biggest scores may wait until you know who can take the goods.
Known ways to spend it: clothes, makeup, hairstyles, car customization and garages. Stolen street cars can be registered as personal vehicles for a fee, high-end ones only once unlocked. Safehouses are not for sale: Jason and Lucia are on the run.

In depth: GTA 6 Money
Are armored vans a robbery tier in GTA 6?
Not confirmed. TGG saw vans that "look like mini heists" and floated them as a possible tier; Rockstar has not said so.
